SCBA Cylinder Time Calculator
How to Calculater Work
The SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) calculator helps users estimate how long an air cylinder will last during use in hazardous or confined spaces.
🔸 Formula Used:
Total Air Volume (litres) = Cylinder Volume × Pressure
👉 e.g., 6L × 200 bar = 1200 litres
Theoretical Duration (minutes) = Total Air ÷ Breathing Rate
👉 e.g., 1200 ÷ 40 L/min = 30 minutes
Usable Working Time = Theoretical Duration ÷ 3
👉 10 minutes (This follows the Rule of Thirds:
→ ⅓ for entry
→ ⅓ for exit
→ ⅓ reserve/emergency)
How to Use This SCBA Calculator:
- Enter the cylinder volume (in litres) – e.g., 6 L.
- Enter the pressure (in bar) – e.g., 200 bar.
- Enter your air consumption rate (in litres per minute) – usually around 40 L/min.
- Click “Calculate” to instantly get:
- Total air volume in litres
- Theoretical working time
- Usable safe time (based on the Rule of Thirds)
Who Should Use This Calculator:
- Safety officers and HSE professionals
- Firefighters and emergency responders
- Confined space workers
- Training institutes and safety course students
- Anyone using SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) in hazardous environments
Why You Should Use It:
- 🛑 Safety First: Prevent running out of air in confined or hazardous spaces
- ⏱️ Plan Your Time: Know exactly how long you can safely stay in an environment
- 🔁 Rule of Thirds: Calculates based on standard safety practice — one-third air for entry, one-third for exit, one-third reserved for emergencies
